ST. LOUIS SUBURBAN PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL

ATHLETIC AND ACTIVITY ASSOCIATION

PRESS RELEASE: August 6, 2020

On August 5, 2020, the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) announced that member schools utilizing a virtual instructional model would be allowed to participate in MSHSAA sanctioned athletics and activities. The participation in all MSHSAA sanctioned activities is dependent on member schools complying with any guidelines set forth by their county health departments. In St. Louis County, the guidance for participation in sports has been provided by a cooperative of health professionals and leaders through the St. Louis Sports COVID-19 Task Force.

The St. Louis Suburban Athletic Conference was encouraged that students could potentially participate in activities and athletics regardless of the school district’s instructional model. We firmly believe that participation in high school activities is an important part of student’s growth and development, but only if it can be accomplished in a manner that keeps students safe. Student and staff safety remains a paramount concern.

Practices for MSHSAA sanctioned activities and athletics can commence on August 10, 2020. Due to the timing of MSHSAA’s announcement allowing member schools utilizing a virtual instructional platform to participate in sports, the St. Louis Suburban Athletic Conference will not be prepared to begin practices on August 10. Additional planning time by school leaders is required to develop parameters that ensure the safety of our students while complying with St. Louis Sports Medicine COVID – 19 Task Force, St. Louis County and MSHSAA guidelines. Guidance will be developed for high school student athletes participating in both high and low contact sports.

Timelines and details for the start of activities and athletics will be released as soon as possible.
