Girls wrestling is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, and in its inaugural season in Missouri, the sport has been overwhelmingly successful. Mehlville had six girls on the wrestling team by the time the season started, and all six of these girls lasted throughout the season. In every dual these girls competed in, they won more matches than their opponents; however, the opponents ended up with higher scores due to having fuller lineups. Mehlville is hopeful of a fuller team and a better record next year, as all shapes, sizes, and experience levels are welcome.
Sam Apple is one girl who went into the first Girls Wrestling season with experience wrestling boys on the high school level, as well as girls on the national level. This experience proved to be beneficial, as she went into the state tournament with an individual record of 25-0. Sam went 2-2 at the state tournament, giving her a fourth place finish to make her the first female state medalist in Mehlville Wrestling history. We are all very proud of Sam’s accomplishments and looking forward to seasons to come.
